Meet the Makers
Hi there! We are Ruaridh and Catriona Munro, husband and wife and the creators of Skyran Candle Company. We thought it would be good if we shared the story of how our little business came to be.
The story starts with Catriona's love of all things to do with home fragrances, especially candles. However, she encountered a problem that many other people across the sector find - many candlemakers make products which produce black soot and other nasty chemicals.
This didn't bother her much until an illness made her rethink her choices about what kind of scented products she surrounded herself with. After some further research, she discovered that it was possible to find home fragrances which were made up of ingredients that are safer to us, and to our planet.
The COVID-19 lockdown resulted in us both having job offers rescinded which was a great disappointment to us but this also presented a unique opportunity to explore the home fragrances venture further. The more we learned about non-toxic scents, the more passionate we got in starting a business, and to share our findings with you!
The first order of business was settling on a name. After a few names were floated, we settled on the Orcadian word "Skyran" - which means "glittering" or "to shine brightly", which we thought was quite an apt name for a candle company! Our first collection is inspired on the changing Orkney seasons and is based on Catriona's upbringing in the islands.
After testing a few different scents, we started to converge on a few combinations of fragrances we both love. After building enough stock and establishing an online presence we are now so excited to finally be able to share our products with you, we really hope you enjoy them!
